Independent Study

Independent Study Credit at Owen

Independent study courses provide a great way for Owen students to connect with real world experiences that prepare them for the startup world.  Students register for an Independent Study course just like any other course.  Go to Kelly Christie’s office to pick up a form to register for a course, complete the form, and take it to the professor you want to direct your project.  Students must commit to ten hours of work per week (70 hours total) to earn two hours of credit for a course.  Students can find a company that needs help to solve a problem, or they can watch the Owen Daily News for announcements of available projects.

Examples of projects:

1.       Two students worked with a small nonprofit to create a practical, usable accounting system for the organization.

2.       A student team did a marketing analysis for a classmate developing a new business.

3.       A student helped do a financial analysis of a project for a company, and that analysis evolved into a project that required the student to negotiate with investment bankers, do due diligence on a potential purchase, and to manage the financial aspects of a merger with another company.

4.       A student built a financial planning model for startups of Project Music, a program at the Nashville Entrepreneurship Center.

5.       A student worked with a chocolate sommelier to create a company to bring back the true chocolate heritage.

See below for current projects available.
